Keeping up with the demands of parenting in today's fast-changing, economically-pressured world, while still taking time to relish the "great little moments" with their children, is a steep challenge for today's moms, according to a new survey sponsored by the Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® brand – but most wouldn't trade parenting for anything. The Goldfish Moms' Straight Talk on Parenting survey was conducted in late May by the market research firm, TNS, with 1,021 moms of kids 6-to-12 across the United States.
The good news: An overwhelming majority of moms surveyed (94 percent) said that being a mom is "the best job I have," and a similarly large majority reported that they are doing the best they can as a mother. However, despite doing their best, a large percentage of moms expressed concerns that their best may not be good enough with two out of three moms indicating that they "worry whether I'm doing a good enough job as a mother." Moms are clear that being a mom isn't easy. Eighty-five percent claimed that it is the hardest job they have.
A majority of moms (60 percent) maintain that raising kids is harder today compared to when they were growing up. The highest rated sources of worry for those moms were:
- Kids growing up too fast
- Too much social/peer pressure
- Concerns for children's safety
- Too much exposure to disturbing world events, and
- Popular culture not being in line with their family values
Not surprisingly, financial pressures are another source of concern for parents today. Some 88 percent of moms surveyed said their families are being impacted by current economic conditions. Although a notable 61 percent of respondents are currently employed either full- or part-time, almost three quarters said they worry about being able to financially provide their child's everyday wants and needs. A whopping 80 percent are concerned about paying for their child's college education – and less than a third feel they are prepared to deal with this issue.
Clearly parents today have a lot on their plates. In fact, half of the mothers polled reported that they "often feel overwhelmed by daily demands of being a parent" and nearly 60 percent confessed that they sometimes feel as though they are reaching their breaking point when it comes to dealing with their kids.
The challenges facing parents appear to leave many moms questioning whether they will be able to deliver on their own lofty – in some cases, too lofty – goals as a parent. In fact, one out of three moms admitted to setting expectations for themselves as a parent that are "unrealistic." And three quarters worry whether they can "provide the skills their kids need to reach their potential." In fact, one survey respondent said her number one concern was "making sure that when my children become adults - and hopefully parents themselves - that I have given them the tools to be successful, happy and comfortable with who they are."
The Goldfish Fishful ThinkingSM Program Gives Moms Tips and Techniques for Success
As a brand trusted by moms for more than 40 years, Pepperidge Farm Goldfish knows how hard parenting can be and understands the pressures that go along with it. That's why, since 2004, the brand has partnered with positive psychology expert and mother of four, Dr. Karen Reivich, to provide moms with valuable information and resources to support their tireless efforts to raise kids who are confident, resourceful and have a positive attitude. The program, Fishful ThinkingSM, is a resource for parenting positive kids.
In association with Dr. Reivich, the Goldfish brand has continued to expand and enhance its Fishful Thinking resources to promote five key skills: Optimism, Emotional Awareness, Goal Setting/Hope, Resilience and Empowerment. Whether it's talking to kids about how to deal with the everyday ups and downs of life, or teaching effective problem-solving techniques, Fishful Thinking helps empower parents to develop positive communication with their children and practice skills using fun, easy activities via a dynamic online website, www.FishfulThinking.com.
"Clearly, it's not easy being a parent today," said Patsy Fox, Goldfish brand Group Marketing Manager at Pepperidge Farm and mother of two. "Our research shows that moms welcome useful information to help boost their confidence about meeting the many daily demands of parenting. The Pepperidge Farm Goldfish brand is committed to providing parents with just that kind of help through our Fishful Thinking program. It's an idea-filled resource that includes articles, activities, quizzes, videos and sharing opportunities to help moms enrich the little moments of parenting every day."
In fact, moms in the survey spoke a lot about the importance of those little moments with their children. When asked about their greatest joys of parenting, many responded with comments like: "having fun with my kids," "seeing my children smile," "watching them achieve at even the small things" and "a hug out of the blue."
"The survey's interesting results give us another layer of insight about how moms view their challenges today, and their struggle to meet those challenges," said Dr. Reivich. "The Fishful Thinking resources we've developed can help parents be more confident in their parenting, and thus be more effective in empowering their children to be optimistic and resilient in realizing their own potential for success."
The Pepperidge Farm Goldfish brand's coalition of resources in support of parents is continuing to grow. In May, The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) entered into a partnership with Fishful Thinking. Together, they will help provide parents with an exceptional resource for parents to help promote optimism, drive resilience and empower children to be the successes they were born to be.
"All parents want their children to be able to handle life's challenges. We see this in schools every day," commented Patti L. Harrison, NASP President. "The good news is that children are tremendously resilient and often simply need encouragement, a few skills and the expectation that they will succeed. The Fishful Thinking program provides parents with fun, easy activities that can help them teach their children to problem solve and deal with life's ups and downs."
In coming months, school psychologists around the country will be sharing Fishful Thinking strategies with parents and reinforcing the reciprocal link between optimism and resilience and school success.
The Pepperidge Farm Goldfish survey was conducted by TNS. 1,021 moms were interviewed. In analyzing the results, statistical weights were applied to be reflective of the population of moms with children 6 to 12 years of age in the continental United States. The study was conducted online and the sample was selected from the TNS 6thdimensionTM Managed Online Access Panel. Interviews were collected between May 28th and June 2, 2009. The analyses utilized statistical tests of significance, at the 90% confidence level, to identify significant differences among 4 census regions.

An August 2009 online poll revealed that nearly a third of parents believe it is more likely that their child would become a famous movie star than eat the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. To help parents make it a little easier for their children (who may or may not be future celebrities) eat more vegetables, Pepperidge Farm is pleased to announce a delicious addition to the Goldfish line of baked snack crackers with the launch of Goldfish® Garden Cheddar snack crackers − smiling snacks that contain 1/3 serving of real vegetables in each serving of Goldfish crackers. Just in time for back-to-school, new Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers are a great lunchbox snack and give kids a little vegetable boost they need along with the great taste of Goldfish that has been loved by families for more than 40 years.
Goldfish Garden Cheddar snacks are made without artificial preservatives and contain 0 grams of Trans Fat. Perfect for an afterschool snack or a busy day on the go, the new Goldfish variety is sure to please both moms and kids alike. While the U.S.D.A.'s MyPyramid recommends 2½ cups of vegetables per day as an essential part of a healthy diet, parents can attest that many children fail to get this recommended amount. In fact, 73 percent of poll participants admitted that their child has gone an entire day without eating a single vegetable. Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers make it a little easier (and fun) to help children get more of the necessary vegetables they need.
"We're thrilled to offer new Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers in an effort to help moms provide wholesome, tasty snacks their kids will love with the addition of vegetables as an unexpected bonus," said Michael Simon, Senior Vice President/General Manager – Snacks Division at Pepperidge Farm. "Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers are a great-tasting snack option that moms can feel good about giving to their families, especially during the back-to-school season."
Many parents agree that veggies at mealtime are a source of struggle – nearly one third of parents stated that getting their child to eat vegetables is harder than getting them to clean their bedroom. Make this battle a bit easier this back-to-school season with help from Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers, which are available in two flavors: Cheddar and Flavor Blasted® Xtra Cheddar.
Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers will be available in August at major supermarkets, grocery stores and mass merchandisers nationwide with a suggested retail price of $2.19. For additional information on Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Garden Cheddar crackers, please visit www.pepperidgefarm.com.
The Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Garden Cheddar online poll was conducted by Wakefield among 400 nationally representative parents between August 6th and August 11th, 2009 using an e-mail invitation and an online questionnaire.

Adding a new dimension to its commitment of making a positive difference in children's lives, Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® brand is sponsoring City Year, a national organization founded in 1988 upon the belief that young people can change the world. The Goldfish brand is donating $625,000 to City Year over three years and sponsoring its 'Starfish' after school program. City Year, in turn, will broaden the reach of Fishful ThinkingSM, a program designed to increase optimism among America's youth.
Fishful ThinkingSM offers parents and teachers information about optimism and its importance in childhood development through an informative, interactive Web site and robust in-school curriculum. The brand has been partnering with Karen Reivich Ph.D., an expert in the field of positive psychology in children and adolescents and a mother of four, to develop the program.
"The Goldfish brand is committed to strengthening initiatives that help kids build resiliency and confidence in order to achieve their goals," says Michael Simon, Vice President/General Manager—Snacks Division at Pepperidge Farm. "That's why we're a proud national sponsor and supporter of City Year, an organization that empowers young people to make a difference."
The City Year Starfish program offers elementary school children safe, structured and fun after school activities to foster a greater understanding of community and mobilize children to work together to make a difference in their schools and neighborhoods. To help raise awareness of the Starfish program and share City Year's message that one person can make a difference, the Goldfish brand has created a new product—Goldfish Starfish crackers. Available in stores now, the product contains a mix of cheddar crackers in both Goldfish and Starfish shapes, and retails for a suggested retail price of $1.99 for a 6.6 ounce bag. The creation of the new Starfish shaped crackers was based on the following inspirational City Year founding story:
A little girl was walking along a beach that was covered with dying starfish. She picked one up and tossed it back into the ocean. A man said, "There are too many, you will never make a difference." She listened, then tossed another one back into the sea and said, "I made a difference to that one." Inspired, the man and others joined, and all of the starfish were saved.
"The Goldfish brand and City Year are united by a shared commitment to making a difference in the lives of children, and now with this unique product, further promoting Optimism and idealism in America's children," said Michael Brown, CEO and Co-Founder of City Year. "Together, we are sending a powerful message to children that they have the power to improve the world and enhance their own lives through perseverance and service to others."
The Goldfish brand will support the City Year sponsorship through product donations, on-pack communications, print advertising in women's general interest publications, and national radio advertising. The radio spot features Stephanie Wu, Senior Vice President of Program and Service at City Year, reciting the Starfish 'founding story.' "It's a very powerful piece and Stephanie delivers it with such conviction," said Simon. "Every time I hear it, it reminds

Pepperidge Farm and Leading Psychology Expert Develop Program to Help Foster Optimism in American Youth
Mothers Stress Optimism as a Primary Source of Children's Happiness, According to Gallup Survey
To encourage optimism in America's youth, the Pepperidge Farm Goldfish® brand has launched a comprehensive program designed to connect parents, teachers, and other concerned adults with resources about optimism in children. The Goldfish brand has partnered with Karen Reivich Ph.D., an expert in the field of positive psychology in children and adolescents and a mother of four, on its Fishful ThinkingSM program to help inform parents and teachers about the importance of optimism in childhood development and to offer tools to help them easily incorporate optimism into children's daily lives in a fun way.
Short or tall, blue eyes or brown, extroverted or introverted. These and other traits shape who people become. Unlike height or eye color, optimism is a teachable skill that all children can learn, according to Dr. Reivich, the co-director of the Penn Resiliency Project at the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
As part of the Fishful ThinkingSM program, Goldfish has created a Web site (www.fishfulthinking.com) to connect parents and teachers with information about optimism and children. It includes downloadable articles, such as "Optimism: A Key Ingredient in Happiness," as well as easy-to-follow tips, fun activities and games that can be used every day including the "Happiness Scavenger Hunt," "Emotion Charades" and "Silver Lining Games." Many of the activities and games can be adapted to children's ages. The content on the Web site will be refreshed regularly with additional exercises, articles and relevant information for building and maintaining optimism in children.
"The Goldfish brand is committed to helping children realize their full potential by promoting a healthy lifestyle," said Michael Simon, Vice President/General Manager – Snacks Division at Pepperidge Farm. "We have been bringing smiles to kids for more than forty years, and we are dedicated to making a difference in children's lives from the products we make to the services we support."
According to Dr. Reivich, research shows that no matter how optimistic children are to begin with, they can increase and strengthen their optimism through a set of learned skills. Optimism is a critical skill that helps children be resilient in the face of problems and adversity, and increases their overall happiness. For instance, children who are optimistic are more likely to be successful in dealing with challenges and setbacks throughout their lives.
"In today's complex world, teaching young children ways to increase their optimism and resilience is more important than ever," says Dr. Reivich. "I am excited to be working with Goldfish to share with parents how to feel more confident in supporting their kids and offer them guidance on instilling optimism and resilience in their children."
Dr. Reivich is co-author of the books, "The Optimistic Child" and "The Resilience Factor." Dr. Reivich defines optimism as the skill of seeing the positive aspects of a situation – the belief that things can change for the better and that one can control the direction of one's own life. According to Dr. Reivich, optimism is a teachable skill that is important for all children, regardless of his or her circumstances."
In developing the Fishful Thinking program, the Pepperidge Farm Goldfish brand conducted research on optimism, including a survey by the Gallup Organization. According to the Gallup survey, moms consider optimism as one of the most important factors in determining the happiness of their children. Other findings from the survey include:
- 78% of mothers with school-aged children believe that optimism and a positive attitude are very important factors in determining happiness for their children.
- 98% believe there is a lot of pressure on children today.
- 83% of moms think it's harder to be a kid than ever before.
- 60% say they wish they were better able to help their child deal with worry and anxiety.
- 99% of moms agree that teachers can have a powerful effect on kids' confidence.
- 88% of moms agree that optimism can be taught.
