Ice Cream in a Bag

Summers can be hard, and the months of July and August seem the hardest in terms of getting the kids running around and not just sitting still. The days seem to drag on endlessly, and I know, as someone trying to balance working hours and summer schedules, it can be all too easy to tell the kids to find something to do on their own, which often leads to them flipping on the television instead of doing anything productive.
In an effort to combat the screen, last summer I enacted Food Science Camp for the kids, and each week we picked a special food-related project to do in the yard. The kids had fun turning cream into butter, making their own ice cream in minutes, watching a potato cook in the center of a metal bowl pointed at the sun, making pretzel dough and cooking it in a pizza box, and more.
If you're looking for an activity to get your kids going this summer, try this easy-to-pull-off ice cream in a zip-top bag. It's fun to see the kids' faces as milk and sugar turn into a frozen treat with nothing but the power of their hands giving it a good shake.
Ice Cream in a Bag
3/4 cup cream
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
To Freeze:
1 quart-sized zip-top bag
1 gallon-sized zip-top bag
1/2 cup rock salt
3 cups ice
gloves or towel for mixing
Add the cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla to the quart-sized bag and squish to mix, sealing tightly. Add ice and rock salt to the gallon-sized bag and place the quart-sized bag inside it. Seal and shake the gallon sized bag with one hand below it and one hand holding the top, rocking it back and forth quickly. Use gloves or a cloth to hold the bag.
Shake for 10-15 minutes until ice cream is stiff. Remove the small bag from the larger. Carefully open the bag so as not to let the salt water drip in and scoop out frozen ice cream. Have your kids take the temperature of the rock salt and ice to see just how cold it was as you enjoy your bowl of ice cream.
Makes 2 small servings.
